The mattress that you are currently using affects the health of your back. If it is not right for you and you are suffering from constant back pain, it might be the cause. A mattress that promotes good posture while sleeping, relieves pressure and allows the muscles to relax is ideal if you don’t want to suffer from chronic back pain.
While there are a lot of great mattresses available to choose from, there is no such thing as the perfect mattress that will be perfect for anyone. Since everyone is different, a mattress that is great for one person may be the worst for another.
The best way to determine if a mattress is good for you is to sleep on it for at least a few weeks. This is to allow the mattress and your body to adjust to each other and determine if it is good.
Buying a mattress in a store and laying on several mattresses for a few minutes will not cut it and will only be a waste of time due to a number of reasons. One is that the mattress on the showroom and the mattress that you will be getting if you buy it are on a different level of “break-in”. Also, the environment in the showroom and the room that you will place your mattress in will be very different as well.
I’m not saying that you should not buy a mattress in a store, however, you should look for mattresses that offer a “sleep trial”. A sleep trial is the best way to determine if the mattress is right for you because you will get to keep the mattress for a certain number of days and test it at the comfort of your home. If you are satisfied, you keep it but if you are not, you can return it for a full refund.
Now, I haven’t been to a brick and mortar mattress store for a while now and I don’t know if they are offering sleep trials but I do know that online only mattress stores offer them. The one I recently purchased, the Zenhaven Mattress, have one. It is a great mattress and being able to test it at home was a great luxury. It is a natural latex mattress and according to Mattress Reviews HQ, it is considered the “endgame” mattress for a lot of people and this quite frankly, convinced me to try it.
However, when you buy a mattress online, be it for back pain or just in general, you should always look at different reviews to help you decide even though there are sleep trials available.
Having said all that, here are the things that you should look for when buying a mattress for back pain.
Firmness of the Mattress and Your Sleeping Posture
Basically, there are three types of sleepers; back, side and stomach. Your sleeping position will determine how firm your mattress should be.
If you are a back sleeper, a medium-firm mattress is strongly suggested because it is not too firm that it will push up against the spine and it is not too soft that it is lacking in support.
If you are a side sleeper, a slightly soft mattress is great because you will experience a lot of pressure in the shoulder and hip area if the mattress is a bit firm.
If you are a stomach or front sleeper, you will need a firm mattress so that it pushes up against your stomach. A mattress that is too soft will put your spine in a bad position while you sleep.
Type of Mattress
There are different types of mattresses such as memory foam, innerspring, latex, inflatable and other specialized or proprietary foams.
All of these types can be a good fit for you because as I mentioned above, everyone is different and not everyone will have the same preferences. What’s good for others might be the worst for you.
In general though, the most recommended type of mattress for people who suffer chronic back pain is memory foam due to its contouring feature and ability to distribute weight evenly across your body.
Memory foam is also supportive enough so that your body and key areas are supported while you sleep, specifically, the spine. The spine is not a straight line, it is curved and it’s important that the spine is in optimal position while you sleep in order to avoid back pain.
